Nonprofit Consulting Division

Nonprofit Consulting Division

We work with individual organizations, their boards, and professional leaders, in a variety of ways, including:

The Nonprofit Division at our firm facilitates board assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement. We use a combination of online surveys, interviews, and other tools to document your board’s current performance.

A customized assessment will be created to meet your unique needs. The assessment process can include a Board survey/self-assessment, a review of corporate documents, interviews with Board Members, and observations of Board meetings. The assessment may review and address such topics as:

  • Awareness of legal and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Bylaws and corporate documents
  • Committee structure and performance
  • Meeting minutes and agendas to assess compliance and strategic focus
  • Succession planning and leadership development
  • Fiscal policies

We work with you as a neutral, informed facilitator, to assist you in building the Board you need. Facilitations can focus broadly on organizational strategic planning or more specific topics such as your committee structure and how the board functions. Outcomes of such facilitations can include:

  • The development of short, mid, and/or long-term action plans for the Board and/or its committees
  • Strengthening the working relationships between Board Members and/or Board and Staff
  • Resolving conflicts and addressing the “elephant in the room”
  • Clarifying Board and Executive Director roles and responsibilities

We design and facilitate interactive board and board/staff retreats on a variety of topics. We work in partnership with you from planning through follow-up.

We assess governance practices and work with the board to develop a governance approach that allows the board to understand its roles and responsibilities and work effectively in fulfilling its duties to the organization. This includes gathering information, identifying critical issues, developing a plan, managing a change process, and developing tools for long term sustainability.

Our firm works with board chairs or board chairs in conjunction with the chief executive, through individualized coaching sessions to tackle short-and long-term challenges.

We provide interactive digital and in-person training to assist your Board of Directors in better understanding their legal and fiduciary responsibilities. These topics range from a broad session on the duties and responsibilities of the Board of Directors to more in-depth trainings on topics such as:

  • Board development and recruitment: how to assess, orient, train, and build the Board you need to succeed
  • Legal responsibilities: Bylaws, Personnel Policies
  • Fiscal oversight: build your financial literacy, understand your responsibilities
  • Running effective Board and committee meetings
  • Build a strong Board infrastructure: officers, committees, and committee chairs
  • Strategic planning: setting the course for a successful future

Most training sessions are designed for three-hour sessions but can be modified to accommodate your needs, budget, and timeframe.

Our firm provides tools and templates to help the Board develop strong governance practices. In addition to providing these tools, we can help you customize them, so they address the unique needs of your organization. Including:

  • Board Member job description and expectations
  • Board Member application form and interview questions
  • Committee descriptions and charters
  • Committee Work Plans
  • Code of Ethics and Conflict of Interest forms
